About

The second archive.

Pie Gets Me Out of Bed is the second archive in a format that began with chili. That one grew from a single measure, used in scoring places to live and work: how likely a good bowl of chili was nearby. The measure survives here as the probability of pie. Pie was named as the second subject before the first archive was finished.

Vermont’s state pie act asks for a good-faith effort to serve the pie with cheddar, milk or ice cream. Florida named key lime its state pie without defining it, and the color is still argued. Massachusetts made Boston cream pie its official state dessert, and whether it is a pie is argued. Cooks have weighed lard, butter and shortening against one another since Procter & Gamble put a hydrogenated cottonseed fat on sale in 1911. The American Pie Council dates its national championship to 1995, and some of its results now survive only in web archives.

This site is the record we wanted to find. We are outsiders, documenting with care. We don’t pick winners between organizations, regions or kitchens. Every fact links to where it came from, and when the sources disagree, we show you all of them. Where a record is missing, the page says so.

Pie Gets Me Out of Bed is No. 2 in Gets Me Out of Bed, an encyclopedia of things worth waking up for, and a project of Room 527. Corrections, records and testimony: pie@room527.com.
